What to put on a CV with no work experience
If you have no work experience for your CV, put education, projects, volunteering, coursework, and odd jobs you can support — not a fake employment section. Invented employers, dates, and job titles do not belong there. How to start
- Inventory. List finished projects, coursework with a deliverable, volunteer shifts, family-business help, and odd jobs you actually did. Most people with zero employment still fill a page once they stop filtering for the word “job.”

Inventory before writing
List everything you have finished that took longer than a weekend: class projects with deliverables, club or team responsibilities, volunteer shifts, family-business help, freelance gigs however small, self-taught skills with something made to show for them. Structuring the non-job sections
Give each entry the same anatomy an employment bullet gets: a name, a timeframe, your role, and one or two outcome-focused lines. "Food bank volunteer, spring 2025 — coordinated Saturday intake for a team of four; rebuilt the sign-in sheet, cutting duplicate entries" carries more weight than a paragraph about being passionate and hardworking, and it survives the same scrutiny.
Order sections by strength, not by convention. With no employment history, projects or education lead. Skills go near the top only when they are demonstrable — a certification, a portfolio, a repository — not when they are adjectives.
Household work is not invented employment
A neighbouring search is a resume for someone whose recent years were household work, not a paid job. Unpaid household work can sit on the page if you already wrote it as source material — childcare, elder care, household operations — with a timeframe you can support. It does not become a job at an employer you never had.
